1. The influence of polyphenolic compounds on anaerobic digestion of pepper processing waste during biogas and biomethane productionGregor Drago Zupančič, Anamarija Lončar, Jasmina Ranilović, Drago Šubarić, Mario Panjicko, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Pepper processing waste has the potential to be used as a substrate in the process of anaerobic digestion, but because of its high polyphenol content, certain limitations are expected. During the determination of the biodegradability of pepper samples, a biogas potential of 687 L/kg DM was observed, as well as a biomethane potential of 401 L/kg DM. While both the testing of biodegradability and the process in the pilot scale progressed, it was observed that total polyphenol content in both cases decreased. Also, as far as individual polyphenols during the process in the pilot scale are concerned, it can be observed that at the end of the process no procyanidin A2, epicatechin, myricetin, and quercetin were detected. The observed concentration of the ferulic acid on the last
day of the process was 0.09 μg/g. Finally, it can be concluded that the presence of polyphenols did
not significantly affect the biogas potential of pepper waste. Due to its relatively stable biogas production,
as far as biogas production on the pilot scale is concerned, it can be concluded that pepper
processing waste has the potential to be used as a substrate for biogas production. 2. Structure optimisation of biopigment prodigiosin from Serratia marcescens ATCC 27117 and antimicrobial and anticancer properties of novel halogenated derivativesJelena Lazić, 2022, doctoral dissertation Abstract: Prodigiosins (PGs) are a class of bacterial secondary metabolites with remarkable biological activities and colour. In this study, optimised fermentative production of prodigiosin (PG) using waste processed meat as a substrate has been achieved to levels of 83.1 ± 3.0 mg/L from a commercially available Serratia marcescens ATCC 27117 strain within 12 h. Methods were established for the reliable PG extraction from both the bacterial cell pellet and the culture supernatant, while gravitation column chromatography was used to obtain pure bacterial PG.
The structure of the isolated PG was optimised by environmentally acceptable oxidative bromination reactions, obtaining mono- and dibrominated derivatives (PG-Br and PG-Br2). Chemical structures were confirmed by structural characterisation using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS), showing that PG-Br is a mixture of two monobrominated isomers in approximately equal ratios, while PG-Br2 was afforded as a pure derivative.
PG and its brominated derivatives (Br-derivatives) showed anticancer potential with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values ranging from 0.62 to 17.00 μg/mL on four tested cancer cell lines (A549 lung, A375 skin, MDA-MB-231 breast, HCT116 colon) and an induction of early apoptosis, but low selectivity against healthy cell lines (MRC-5 lung fibroblasts and HaCaT skin keratinocytes). All three PG, PG-Br and PG-Br2 compounds did not affect roundworms (Caenorhabditis elegans) at concentrations up to 50 μg/mL. However, an improved toxicity profile of Br-derivatives in comparison to the parent PG was observed in vivo using zebrafish (Danio rerio) model system, when 10 μg/mL applied at 6 h post fertilisation caused death rate of 100, 30 and 0% by PG, PG-Br and PG-Br2, respectively, which is a significant finding for further structural optimisations of bacterial PGs. 3. Nutritional quality and safety of the spirulina dietary supplements sold on the Slovenian marketJasmina Masten, Marta Jagodic Hudobivnik, Marijan Nečemer, Katarina Vogel-Mikuš, Iztok Arčon, Nives Ogrinc, 2022, original scientific article Abstract: The microalgae Spirulina may be a popular dietary supplement rich in essential nutrients
and vitamins, but oversight of the supplement industry, in general, remains limited, and increasing
incidents of adulteration, misbranding, and undeclared ingredients together with misleading claims
create potential risks. In response, this study characterized the elemental, amino acid and fatty acid
content of commercially available Spirulina supplements in Slovenia using EDXRF, ICP-MS and
GC-MS and compared the results with their nutritional declaration. The gathered data confirm that
Spirulina supplements are a good source of calcium (0.15 to 29.5% of RDA), phosphorous (3.36–26.7%
of RDA), potassium (0.5 to 7.69% of RDA) and selenium (0.01 to 38.6% of RDA) when consumed
within recommended amounts. However, although iron contents were relatively high (7.64 to 316%
of RDA), the actual bioavailability of iron was much lower since it was mainly present as the ferric
cation. This study also confirms that pure Spirulina supplements are a good source of essential
and non-essential amino acids, and !-6 but not !-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The presence of
additives resulted in significant variation in nutrient content and, in some instances, lower product
quality. Moreover, a high proportion (86.7%) of inappropriate declarations regarding the elemental
content was observed. Overall, the study conclusions underline the need for a stricter control system
for Spirulina-based supplements. Keywords: Spirulina, microalgae, cyanobacteria, elements, toxic elements, amino acids, fatty acids, authenticity, safety, quality Published in RUNG: 24.03.2022; Views: 1634; Downloads: 0 This document has many files! More... |

Analiza zaobjema naslednje romane: Posebne nežnosti (1990) Marjete Novak Kajzer; Moreno (2003) in Smrt slovenske primadone (2007) Brine Svit ter Sobo gospe Bernarde (2007) in Ino (2011) Cvetke Bevc. 8. Radioactive isotopes in ground waters of SloveniaKatarina Kovačič, 2015, doctoral dissertation Abstract: Within the duration of three projects (J7-0363, L1-0437, L1-4280), in the period from 2008 to 2013, measurements of tritium (3H), 40K and γ-ray emitters of uranium (238U, 226Ra and 210Pb) and thorium (228Ra and 228Th) decay series in groundwaters of Slovenia were carried out. Tritium was also measured in precipitation at selected locations. Groundwater sampling sites were selected in order to cover the most representative lithological units that are found in Slovenia and were at the same time evenly distributed throughout the country. In total, 281 samples were measured from 120 different locations.
Measurements in the period 2009-2013 have shown that tritium concentrations in precipitation in Ljubljana are for about 30% lower compared to those in Vienna, however they are in line with seasonal fluctuations observed in Vienna. This was an important information in the process of the reconstruction of past tritium concentrations in precipitation in Ljubljana (tritium curve) for the missing period between 1953 and 1981. Tritium curve represents the input data when determining the average age of water.
In determining the influence of various parameters on the final interpretation of the groundwater age it has been found that the greatest uncertainty contribute the measurements of the tritium curve and the measurements of tritium in groundwater samples. Also, the interaction of other factors (continental effect, rainfall regime, infiltration) and the lack of knowledge of them may have a major impact on the misinterpretation of groundwater age.
Based on tritium concentration, groundwaters were divided into 4 major categories, into groundwaters that are older than 100 years (tritium concentration was below the detection limit), groundwaters, where the older component prevails (concentration of tritium was between 0 and 2.5 TU), groundwaters with the age between 30 and 60 years (the concentration of tritium was on average 8 TU) and recent groundwaters with age up to 15 years (tritium concentration of about 6 TU).
The natural background of γ-ray emitters was determined for each lithological unit. The most represented radionuclide was 40K with concentrations always above the detection limit. A dependency of 40K concentrations on nitrate was observed, especially in the recharge areas, where limestone prevailed. Other γ-ray emitters revealed some dependence on nitrate concentration, especially both radium isotopes (226Ra and 228Ra). The concentration of 210Pb in groundwaters is mainly due to the connection with the surface and consequently with atmospheric 210Pb. The highest concentrations of 238U and 228Ra were measured in groundwaters from recharge areas in clastic rocks with a clay component. In contrast to the expected, concentrations for all γ-ray emitters (except 210Pb) were the lowest or even not detectable, in groundwaters from recharge areas in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Among γ-ray emitters and categorization based on tritium concentrations, elevated concentrations of 238U were observed in groundwaters with prevailing older component. Elevated concentrations of 40K were also observed in them. The largest scattering of 210Pb and 40K concentrations was observed in recent waters, which indicates a connection with the surface and application of fertilizers.
