Polyphenol, antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of six different white and red wine grape processing leftovers : /
Kajetan Trošt, Anja Klančnik, Branka Mozetič Vodopivec, Melita Sternad Lemut, Katja Jug, Peter Raspor, Sonja Smole Možina, 2016, original scientific article

Abstract: BACKGROUND During winemaking, grape polyphenols are only partly extracted, and consequently unexploited. The main aim was to characterise the phenolic content of freeze-dried grape skin and seed (FDSS) extracts obtained from Slovenian and international grape varieties and evaluate their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-adhesive activities. RESULTS FDSS of six Vitis vinifera L. grapevine cultivars from Vipava Valley region (Slovenia) underwent extraction and sonification under different conditions. Flavonols were the predominant content of extracts from white ‘Zelen’ and ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ grape varieties, with strong antimicrobial activities against Gram-negative bacteria. ‘Pinot Noir’ FDSS extracted with 50% aqueous ethanol extraction produced a high phenolic content in the final extract, which was further associated with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against all tested bacteria. Bacterial adhesion to stainless steel surfaces with minimal and maximal surface roughness was significantly inhibited (up to 60%) across a wide FDSS concentration range, with lower concentrations also effective with two types of stainless steel surfaces. CONCLUSION FDSS extracts from winery by-products show interesting phenolic profiles that include flavonols, catechins, anthocyanins, and hydroxycinnamic acids, with yields influenced by grapevine cultivar and extraction conditions. The antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-adhesive activities of 50% aqueous ethanol ‘Pinot Noir’ FDSS extract reveals potential applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries for these bioactive residues.

THE EFFECTS OF MIXED COMMUNAL WASTE RECYCLING MANAGEMENT IN SLOVENIA - CASE STUDY
Peter Bohinec, 2016, master's thesis

Abstract: With the adjustment of the Slovenian legislation with the European one we have an obligation to increase the reuse and recycling target for municipal solid waste by up to 65% by 2030 and gradual limitation of the landfilling of municipal solid waste to 10% by 2030 (Directive 2008/98 on waste, 2015). This represents a major challenge for municipalities in Slovenia. This study contains a plan for establishing new waste treatment facility in the Municipality of XY. As all new constructions in Slovenia, the presented facility needs to provide all the environmental protective measures predicted by the legislation. Beside the legislation, it is also important to ensure that new waste treatment facilities will have a low or no effect on the environment. Based on the Environmental Protection Act and the Construction Act of Slovenia, measures to ensure long term monitoring of the waste treatment facility as a case study in the Municipality of XY are presented. Before constructing the new facility, the track of “baseline” – a one-year monitoring of the following environmental parameters was crucial: groundwater, air dust deposit, condition of the soil on the area where new facility will operate in the future. The thesis points out the importance of the so-called track “baseline” monitoring of environmental parameters before new waste treatment facility will operate. This will be the basis for the introduction of operating monitoring for the new waste treatment facility in the future. Data for the analysis of presence of pollutants were acquired from groundwater, air dust deposit, soil sampling and containment of chemical pollutants. The following methods of analysis were employed in the acquisition of laboratory results of specific physical and chemical parameters: ion chromatography, gas chromatography, spectrophotometry, titration, inductive coupled plasma – mass detector, measurement with an electrode. It was determined that in the period between 2011 and 2012, the groundwater samples taken from three drilled wells containing pollutants as for example in the P-2 well there were adsorbable organic halogens - AOX, boron and mineral oils found. The results of the dust deposit show increased value of lead and zinc. More concerning are analysis of the soil samples where the quantity of copper at the MM2 measuring point were 530mg/kg, on 20 April 2012 the present critical level was 300 mg/kg. At the same measuring point (MM2) on the same day, the value of zinc was 650 mg/kg and almost reached the critical level of 720 mg/kg. The levels of heavy metals as cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in the soil samples taken at the MM2 and MM3 measuring points were at the warning level. All the detected parameters were evaluated and present a good basis for future operational monitoring of the environment in the area of the new waste treatment facility in the future. This case study has shown that planned steps in the improvement of the waste management in the Municipality of XY are crucial to protect the environment. The analysis and interpretation present an important basis for planning and monitoring a new waste treatment facility which will help to improve our goals and reduce landfilling to 10% and increace recycling by up to 65% by 2030 as predicted by the Directive on waste (Directive 2008/98 on waste, 2015).

Under All the Hats of Quality —- from a round table discussion among teachers, students, quality experts, policy makers…
Peter Purg, Potokar Urša B., 2016, scientific film, scientific sound or video publication

Abstract: This 54-minute full feature documentary and research film features, in a unique intermedia manner, the findings of a round table, conceived and moderated by dr. pETER Purg; at the "Quality of University Teaching and Learning" international conference, Brdo pri Kranju in April 6, 2016. This video (directed and shot by P. Purg, and edited by Urša .B. Potokar) presents the issues emerging from a round table discussion among teachers, students, quality experts and policy makers from different disciplines and countries. As a "mixed media publication", It links in with an academic article (to be) published after the conference by P. Purg, discussing the selected utterances as evidence of emerging topics in academic quality, set against a broader theoretical and policy-related argumentation. Such a mixed-media multi-layered interplay of theory and practice, between text and video, may prove that an open discussion, paired with (audio-visual) self-reflection can both articulate and confirm some crucial commitments for increasing the quality of teaching and learning. The round-table participants mostly agreed academic quality is dependent on teaching and learning quality, while academic practice is moving towards student autonomy and agency. For that both the national and the institutional legislative framework should provide a suitable scaffolding, facilitating better progression through education stages and sustainable student-to-teacher ratios. Good contact with the employment sector remains a key challenge that affects education quality, confirming the need for a wider participation of all higher education stakeholders.

Expectations in Responsive Space
Peter Purg, 2013, scientific film, scientific sound or video publication

Abstract: These responses by the students and mentors were gathered at the "FOReCAST" (Responsive Art in Public Space) workshop at the Graz University of Technology, Institute of Contemporary Art, Graz (Austria) 2014, conducted within the ADRIART.net project. The guiding questions were: - "What do you expect from this workshop?" asked on the first day of the face2face stage (May 6) after a 3-week online collaboration phase; and - "What was the most important thing that happened to you at this workshop?" asked at the last day (May 16). Interviewed, shot and edited by pETER Purg, May 2014. Shot in HD with ActionPro SD20F minicam. This video is part of a large-scale collective methodology reflection of the teachers involved in several "mobilities" (workshops across the region) of the ADRIART project, "Advancing Digitally Renewed Interactions in Art Teaching".
