K-edge absorption spectra of gaseous hydrides

Abstract: X-ray absorption spectra in the energy region of absorption edges reveal fine details of the mechanism of inner-shell photoexcitation: in particular in spectra of free atoms or simple molecules, the simplest being gaseous hydrides [1-2]. In a collection of data from consecutive and homologous elements, analyzed by a common procedure, the reaction channels can be identified with better precision and reliability than in analysis of individual spectra. Absorption spectra of the hydrides of 3p elements (PH3, H2S in HCl) were measured at the XAFS beamline of the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste: a new type of adjustable absorption cell for measurement of noxious gases at room temperature and at low photon energies was developed for the purpose. For the analysis, data from an earlier experiment on 4p hydrides (GeH4, AsH3, H2Se, HBr), and published data of 2p hydrides (CH4, NH3, H2O, HF) [3-4] as well as SiH4 and the noble gases concluding the isoelectronic series (Ne, Ar, Kr) were adopted. The spectra are compared to respective calculated spectra, obtained by atomic HF86, GRASP codes and molecular DFT (Density functional theory) ORCA code [5]. Our analysis of the pre-edge structures showed that the energies and probabilities of singleelectron transitions into the lowermost orbitals with the molecular character were strongly affected by the symmetry of the molecule, essentially in the same way in 3p and 4p homologues, but not in 2p homologues with a stronger influence of the core charge. In transitions to higher orbitals with prevailing atomic character the influence of the molecular field is negligible. The fine structure immediately above the K edge stems from the coexcitation of valence electrons. These coexcitations can be explained as a two-step process: the inner-shell photoeffect followed by the shake-up of a valence electron predominantly to a free atomic orbital. The process is markedly different from coexcitations of more tightly bound electrons [3]. The results of relative shake-up probabilities can be compared to results of emission spectroscopies, the probabilities of double excitation to bound states show a correlation with the dissociation probability of the molecule.

Vpliv notranjih in zunanjih okoljskih dejavnikov na nastanek virusov HPV

Abstract: Humani virusi papiloma so eden najpogostejših vzrokov spolno prenosljivih bolezni in nastanka nekaterih vrst raka, kot so rak materničnega vratu, rakava obolenja na spolovilih ter rak glave in vratu. V diplomskem delu smo ugotavljali vpliv notranjih in zunanjih dejavnikov na nastanek in infektivnost virusov HPV-16, določali pa smo tudi strukturne lastnosti virusnega plašča. Kot notranji dejavnik smo uporabili gostiteljski protein SNX17, ki je ključen za okužbo HPV, kot zunanji dejavnik pa nanodelce titanovega dioksida, ki so pogosta sestavina kozmetičnih izdelkov. Pri pridobivanju virusnih delcev HPV-16 v celični liniji 293TT smo ugotovili, da protein SNX17 in nanodelci TiO2 ne vplivajo na količino virusnih delcev, vplivajo pa na njihovo infektivnost. Potrdili smo, da je protein SNX17 ključnega pomena za okužbo HPV, saj so imeli mutirani virusni delci AA2 bistveno zmanjšano stopnjo okužbe. Podobno smo ugotovili pri uporabi nanodelcev TiO2, kjer je bil upad infektivnosti sorazmeren koncentraciji uporabljenih nanodelcev med fazo nastanka virusnih delcev. Pri strukturnih lastnostih virusnega plašča smo analizirali količino in vrsto vključene reporterske DNA, stabilnost plašča in razmerje proteinov L1 : L2 v plašču. Ugotovili smo, da vezava plaščnega proteina L2 s SNX17 in prisotnost nanodelcev TiO2 na te lastnosti ne vplivata. Zaključili smo, da izbrani okoljski dejavniki, protein SNX17 in nanodelci TiO2 ne vplivajo na osnovne značilnosti nastanka virusnih delcev HPV-16, vplivajo pa na njihovo učinkovitost okužbe gostiteljskih celic.

THE INCIDENCE OF NEW ECOSYSTEMS (EE – EMERGING ECOSYSTEMS) IN THE KARST BIOSPHERE RESERVE : GROUP PROJECT, FINAL REPORT

Abstract: The need of wood for building and heating, the extensive grazing and population growth in the 18th and 19th centuries led to turning the Karst area in Slovenia into a bare land. In the 19th century organised reforestation started which was successfully performed with Black pine (Pinus nigra J. F. Arnold). Later on, the reforestation was replaced by the process of spontaneous afforestation. The successfulness of reforestation with Black pine also made it possible for the native tree species to grow. The abandoning of the use of agricultural land also contributes to the spontaneous afforestation. In this project we determined the changes in forest cover through time. We used aerial photographs from the years 1957, 1975, 1985 and 2015. By drawing polygons on the maps in the QGIS programme on the areas that are covered with forests, are overgrown or are used for agricultural purpose we compared the areas from the maps of different years. We found out that the area covered with forest had increased by more than 50 % from the year 1957 to 2015. The increase in the area of forest cover due to afforestation provides new habitats for fauna and flora to live in.

Edge profiles in K shell photoabsorption spectra of gaseous hydrides of 3p elements and homologues

Abstract: Photoabsorption spectra of gaseous hydrides of 3p elements (PH3, H2S, HCl) are measured in the energy region of photoexcitations pertaining to K edge. The analysis of the edge profile is extended to hydrides of 4p series (GeH4, AsH3, H2Se, HBr) from an earlier experiment, and to published spectra of 2p hydrides (CH4, NH3, H2O, HF) and noble gases Ar, Kr and Ne and SiH4. The edge profiles are modelled with a linear combination of lorentzian components, describing excitations to individual bound states and to continuum. Transition energies and probabilities are also calculated in the non-relativistic molecular model of the ORCA code, in good agreement with the experiment. Edge profiles in the heavier homologues are closely similar, the symmetry of the molecule governs the transitions to the lowest unoccupied orbitals. In 2p series the effect of the strong nuclear potential prevails. Transitions to higher, atomic-like levels remain very much the same as in free atoms.

RAZMNOŽEVANJE TIGRASTEGA KOMARJA (Aedes albopictus) V NOVI GORICI

Abstract: Goriška regija z Novo Gorico je zaradi milega podnebja in prehodne lege ugodno okolje za tujerodne vrste, tako rastlinske kot živalske. V zadnjih letih je invazivna vrsta tigrastega komarja (Aedes albopictus Skuse, 1894) na tem območju naselila areal, v katerem se nemoteno razmnožuje in vzdržuje stalno populacijo. V diplomskem delu smo se odločili spremljati letno dinamiko pojavljanja jajčec in ličink komarjev na različnih lokacijah mestnega, primestnega in gozdnega okolja. S preverjanjem prisotnosti ličink tigrastega komarja na različnih lokacijah smo poskušali dobiti odgovor na to, kje se nahajajo za to vrsto ugodni mikrohabitati. Rezultati so bili pridobljeni s pomočjo pasti, s katerimi smo spremljali številčnost ličink v okolju. Ob zaključku smo preverili še razmerje med številom ličink avtohtonih vrst komarjev in ličink tigrastega komarja. Dobljene vrednosti smo primerjali med seboj, ugotavljali dinamiko razmnoževanja in določali območja, ki jih ta vrsta v večjem številu naseljuje. Iz raziskave smo ugotovili, da tigrasti komar na tem območju naseljuje predvsem urbane habitate, manj pa je zastopan v gozdovih. Začetek pojavljanja prvih ličink smo zabeležili v drugi polovici maja, njihovo število je strmo naraščalo do julija, ko smo raziskavo tudi zaključili. Največje število ličink na vseh vzorčnih mestih je pripadalo tigrastemu komarju, manj pa je bilo avtohtonih vrst komarjev. Med preučevanimi potencialnimi razmnoževalnimi habitati smo daleč največjo številčnost ličink tigrastega komarja zaznali v peskolovih.
