Observing TDEs in the era of LSST

Abstract: The upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will observe ~18000 square degrees of the Southern sky and is expected to discover thousands of transients every night due to its large coverage of the sky and its observing strategy. Being an exceptional transient hunter, we expect the LSST to increase the current observed sample of Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) by a factor of ~1000 in 10 years of survey duration. TDEs are one of the only probes of dormant supermassive black holes in the Universe, and if their observed optical light curves are sampled frequently enough, TDEs can serve as indicators of SMBH mass. In this talk I will present our simulations of TDE observations with LSST, the resulting SMBH mass distributions of observed TDEs, and the efficiency of different proposed observing strategies of LSST in finding these rare transients.

TDEs with LSST

Abstract: The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is an upcoming ground-based survey telescope in Chile, which will produce a multi-color survey of 18000 square degrees of the Southern Sky during its 10 years of observations. Due to its large coverage of the sky and its observing strategy it will be a perfect tool in search for transient astrophysical events, including rare Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs). TDEs occur when a star passes close by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in a center of a galaxy and gets disrupted by its tidal forces. These events emit a bright flare of light, which can be observed to cosmological distances. In the seminar I will provide an overview of the LSST and TDEs, and present the preliminary results on the estimated absolute rates of TDE detection in 10 years of LSST operations, which were obtained by simulations of TDE light curves with an end-to-end LSST simulations framework.

Zofka Kveder as a Cultural Transmitter

Abstract: The article presents the forms and ways in which the cultural transmission of Zofka Kveder took place. It explains in which cultural spaces she worked and how she established personal contacts with artists. Zofka Kveder worked in a multidirectional way, as she promoted Slovene culture in the new cultural environments she moved into, and acquainted the Slovene cultural space with the achievements of foreign artists. She was also a mediator of ideas: feminism, Yugoslavism, and ideas about coexistence and mutual respect between different cultures. Zofka Kveder's translation oeuvre is very rich and almost unexplored so far, which opens up possibilities for new research.

Abstract: Članek predstavi dva projekta digitalizacije in spletne predstavitve kulturne dediščine aleksandrink in različnih skupin žensk, ki so večinsko povezane s primorskim in notranjskim geografskim prostorom: v prvem primeru gre za bazo podatkov o aleksandrinkah, v drugem pa za digitalizirano pisemsko dediščino. Program Študentskih inovativnih projektov za družbeno korist je odlična platforma za pilotske projekte s področja digitalne humanistike, saj predvideva interdisciplinarno delovno skupino študentov in mentorjev ter v korist lokalne skupnosti usmerjene praktične rezultate projekta.

Chemical Instability of an Interface between Silver and Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator at Room Temperature

Abstract: Understanding an interaction at an interface between a topological insulator and a metal is of critical importance when designing electronic and spintronic devices or when such systems are used in catalysis. In this paper, we report on a chemical instability of the interface between Bi2Se3 and Ag studied by X-ray powder diffraction and electron microscopy. We present strong experimental evidence of a redox solid-state reaction occurring at the interface with kinetics that is significant already at room temperature. The reaction yields Ag2Se, AgBiSe2, and Bi. The unexpected room-temperature chemical instability of the interface should be considered for all future theoretical and applicative studies involving the interface between Bi2Se3 and Ag.
