The Cherenkov Telescope Array. Science Goals and Current Status

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major ground-based gamma-ray observatory planned for the next decade and beyond. Consisting of two large atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (one in the southern hemisphere and one in the northern hemisphere), CTA will have superior angular resolution, a much wider energy range, and approximately an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, as compared to existing instruments. The CTA science programme will be rich and diverse, covering cosmic particle acceleration, the astrophysics of extreme environments, and physics frontiers beyond the Standard Model. This paper outlines the science goals for CTA and covers the current status of the project.

Gravity wave instability structures and turbulence from more than 1.5 years of OH[ast] airglow imager observations in Slovenia

Abstract: We analyzed 286 nights of data from the OH* airglow imager FAIM 3 (Fast Airglow IMager) acquired at Otlica Observatory, Slovenia, between 26 October 2017 and 6 June 2019. Measurements were performed with a spatial resolution of 24 m per pixel and a temporal resolution of 2.8 s. Multiple turbulence episodes were observed and the energy dissipation rate in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere region was estimated from image sequences in 25 cases. Values range around 0.08 and 9.03 W/kg and would lead to an approximated localized maximum heating of 0.03–3.02 K per turbulence event.

Orographic gravity waves in OH-airglow imaging systems

Abstract: Atmospheric dynamics is strongly influenced by waves on different scales. Airflow over mountains can lead to all kinds of atmospheric waves, planetary and gravity waves as well as infrasound. Under certain circumstances these waves can propagate through the atmosphere and lead to a re- distribution of energy. In the case of gravity waves, a stably stratified atmosphere is a mandatory requirement for their generation and vertical propagation. Additionally, the vertical propagation depends on the horizontal wind field. In the Alpine and pre-Alpine region, we currently operate five OH-airglow imaging systems, which allow the investigation of orographic gravity waves. Depending on tropo-, strato- and mesospheric wind and temperature, it is checked which wavelengths can propagate into the fields of view of our instruments. This is done for a whole year in order to take into account annual and semi- annual cycles in wind and temperature. Concerning the generation of gravity waves, we put our focus on our OH-airglow imager (FAIM) deployed at Otlica (45.9°N, 13.9°E), Slovenia. Here, we also have additional measurements of an OH-airglow spectrometer (GRIPS). In case studies, we investigate whether strong wind events (Bora) lead to strong gravity waves activity or enhanced potential energy density.

Temna slika : Podoba, zgubljena v temi

Abstract: Motivacija za to magistrsko delo je bilo avtoričino iskanje podobe; prav določene podobe, izgubljene v najglobljih predelih našega uma. Iskanje podobe, ki je nikoli nismo videli ali doživeli; podobe, ki je še nihče nikoli ni videl, ter ob tem izzvati čutila in človeško naravo v danem trenutku. Namen dela je iskati odgovore in si zastaviti vprašanja o tem, kako zelo ljudje zaupajo svojim čutom, ter se spraševati o njihovi zmožnosti, da spremenijo svoje vedenje in svoje rutine. Opazovati, ali si za nekaj sekund drznejo ugasniti luč in s tem pridobijo sposobnost, da vidijo na drugačen način. Ne preseneča dejstvo, da se ljudje močno zanašajo na svoj vid, zaradi česar preostala čutila postanejo nekako manj pomembna in zanesljiva. To delo z naslovom "Temna podoba – podoba, ki smo jo izgubili v temi", raziskuje moč podobe pri manipulaciji množice in vlogo medijev pri nadzoru in pranju možganov pripadnikom nove generacije. V magistrskem delu avtorica najprej predstavi projekte "Kumra 1", "Kumra 2" in "Kaj vidiš v temi?" – poskuse, izvedene v prvem in drugem letu raziskovanja, skozi katere predstavi analizo in opazovanje svojih eksperimentov. Ti predstavljajo začetek raziskovanja čutil v popolni temi, ki je nato pripeljalo do "Sestavljanke", praktičnega dela te naloge, ki se sprašuje o medijski manipulaciji z uporabo podobe.

Cherenkov Telescope Array: The Next Generation Gamma-ray Observatory

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next-generation gamma-ray observatory, investigating gamma-ray and cosmic ray astrophysics at energies from 20 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The observatory, consisting of large arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in both the southern and northern hemispheres, will provide full-sky coverage and will achieve a sensitivity improved by up to an order of magnitude compared to existing instruments such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS. CTA is expected to discover hundreds of new TeV gammaray sources, allowing it to significantly advance our understanding of the origin of cosmic rays, to probe much larger distances in the universe, and to search for WIMP dark matter with unprecedented sensitivity in TeV mass range. The development of CTA is being carried out by a worldwide consortium of scientists from 32 countries. Consortium scientists have developed the core scientific programme of CTA and institutes of the Consortium are expected to provide the bulk of the CTA components. The construction of CTA is overseen by the CTA Observatory that will in the future manage observatory operations, the guest observer programme, and data dissemination. This talk will review the scientific motivation for CTA, focusing on the key science projects that form the core programme of research. The talk will outline the design of CTA, including the science drivers, overall concept, performance optimization, and array layouts. The current status of CTA, including sites, prototype telescope progress, and steps forward will also be described.

An Artist Abroad : The influence of a change in surroundings on artistic creativity

Abstract: The motivation for this thesis was author’s experience as a traveling artists and questioning how experiences abroad influenced her artistic evolution. Nowadays, in the years of globalization and cross-border collaborations, it has become very common for artists to make international connections in order to seek inspiration, funds, connections, exhibition spaces, platforms on which to show their work, studios, workshops, and to establish an international career. The idea of this thesis is to explore the phenomena of traveling artists through literature and analysis of the author’s personal experience and development as an artist in order to identify whether travel is a good practice that should be advised for emerging (or established) artists in order to evolve in their careers. This thesis, “The Influence of a Change in Surroundings on Artistic Creativity,” questions how traveling influences artists and their creativity. It offers a historically overview of the subject and presents contemporary ways and opportunities for artists to travel and work in international environments. In the second part of this thesis, the author presents poetical videos, the “An Artist Abroad – Video Poetry Series,” which were made during the research and through which the author expresses her feelings and observation of her new surroundings. Very personal and poetic work shows the progress and development in the author’s artistic practice, and it shows how new surroundings influenced her creative and production processes.
