Title:Oral tradition and cultural memory in Slovenian area of upper Obsotelje
Abstract:Doctoral thesis Oral traditions and collective memory in Slovenian area of upper Obsotelje presents a comprehensive study of the narrative tradition of the area of upper Obsotelje. Initially it presents the areas and places in three municipalities, from historical and economical, as well as social and cultural aspects. There is a presentation of older narrative material collected with archival work, and newer, which was collected with fieldwork during the research. The material is described and analysed through a genre and thematic structure. The second part of the thesis focuses on the importance and the function of selected elements of the narrative tradition in social and cultural life of the area. As key elements for understanding the significance and functions of narrative tradition, three criteria were shown: 1) the perception of space and time, 2) construction of identities, 3) the modern use of narratives and their functions. Space and time, as reflected through collected narratives is conceived through liminal space and time, etiological legends and historical stories. In the area of upper Obsotelje, humorous stories about people of Lemberg, as well as jeers and other stories about Croatians. are convenient means for separation of groups, which allows the construction of both local, as well as national and other identities. The function of the impelling of sense of local belonging and the creation of local identity also has a modern use of local narrative tradition. Trying to understand the meanings and functions held by the oral tradition in the local environment is the main topic of this thesis.
