Title:The Notion of Literary Competence in the European Literary Framework: A Critical View
Abstract:The European Literary Framework describes the development of literary competence in the secondary education for the country of the European Union. We will present our analysis of this document. We found the framework emphasizes literary knowledge. It assumes that the reader recognizes some literary conventions, e.g. polysemy and semantic innovation. We also find that the framework simplifies the emotional aspects of literary competence, because it is noted that the reader understands them only as a motivation to read literary works. We analyzed the literary works that are proposed in the framework and found that for secondary education it suggests only prose, predominatelly novels and no poetic, lyrical literary works. In addition we found out that the European the literary framework presupposes only the literary theoretical knowledge that is related to narrative literary texts (for example: the plot, the character). A reader with a waste literary competence should on the other hand be acquainted with the whole system of literature and should be able to read different literary genres not just prose. Literary socialization cannot be based only on prose oz. narrative literary works.
