Abstract:Magistrska naloga predstavlja raziskavo reprezentacij moških in moškosti v treh izbranih romanih Ivana Cankarja, ki je osrednji kanonski predstavnik slovenske moderne. V uvodnem delu magistrske naloge so predstavljeni temeljni teoretični koncepti kritičnih študij moških in moškosti, stičišča študij spolov in literarne vede ter problem reprezentacije. Sledi kritičen prikaz znanstvenih del, ki pristopajo k Cankarjevemu literarnemu delu z vidika študijev spolov, kar postavlja temelje za to raziskavo. Osrednji del magistrske naloge predstavlja analiza treh Cankarjevih romanov: Tujci (1901), Martin Kačur (1906) in Novo življenje (1908). Romani so izbrani zato, ker v središče zgodbe postavljajo moške like, kar zagotavlja plodovito polje za raziskovanje različnih reprezentacij moškosti.

Title:Representations of Men and Masculinities in the Selected Novels of Ivan Cankar
Abstract:The master's thesis presents a study of the representations of men and masculinity in three selected novels by Ivan Cankar, the central canonical representative of Slovenian moderna. The main aim of the research was to shed light on the various aspects of male identity that the author depicts in his works and to examine how these are reflected in the context of the social and cultural environment of the time. The methodological framework of the research is based on critical studies of men and masculinity that are rooted in feminist epistemology. This allows for a critical approach to traditional notions of masculinity and an understanding of the social constructions and norms that shape male gender identity. The fundamental theoretical concepts of critical studies of men and masculinity, the intersections of gender studies and literary studies, and the problem of representation are presented in the introductory part of the master thesis. This is followed by a critical review of scholarly works that approach Cankar's literary work from a gender studies perspective, which sets the stage for this research. The central part of the thesis is an analysis of three of Cankar's novels, Strangers (1901), Martin Kačur (1906) and New Life (1908). The novels are chosen because they place male characters at the story's center, providing a prolific field for exploring different representations of masculinity. Through analysis, various aspects of masculinity are examined, including the relationships between male characters, the relationships between male and female characters, the concept of fatherhood, political masculinity, and the position of marginalized masculinity in the social environment. The main findings of the analysis are summarized in the conclusion of the research, which suggests that Cankar's novels portray complex and diverse representations of masculine identity. Through comparison, it was found that all three analyzed novels are based on the clash between traditional hegemonic masculinity on the one hand and inadequate, marginal or compliant masculinity on the other.
